CAMELIDS SERVICES
TB IN CAMELIDS
Rachel is our qualified camelid TB tester here at AVLA and can also help in the export of any stock. When TB testing alpacas they require both a skin and blood test which need to be done on two separate days. Although testing is currently not required routinely, voluntary testing allows you to ascertain the prevalence of TB within your herd.
VACCINATION
We advise that all camelids are routinely vaccinated against clostridial diseases, including tetanus.
As camelids originate from South America they are also used to much more sunlight exposure than we experience here in Somerset! Therefore, we also recommend putting in place regular vitamin D injections. Contact us to discuss your camelid needs further.
ROUTINE SURGICAL PROCEDURES
Castration is the most common routine surgical procedure we carry out. We are able to do this at your premises under sedation and, if needed, we can provide another pair of hands such as a nurse or second vet to ensure things go smoothly.
WORMING
Camelids, like all other animals are susceptible to a parasitic burden. However, they are more susceptible to parasitic disease than other species and this must be taken into account if co-grazing.
Here at AVLA we can advise on the frequency of worming and which product to use. Worm egg counts can be done to assess parasite burdens and based on these we can develop a worming program suitable for your animals.
